FTHS Auto Shop: Where Hands-On Learning Drives Success

This classroom is lively in the best way possible. The sounds of engines starting, hydraulics moving cars into the air, and vibrant discussions among students about the next steps fill the space. This is the auto shop classroom at Freehold Township High School.

In an era where technical skills are increasingly valuable, Automotive 1 and 2 stand out as prime examples of hands-on education. In this dynamic environment, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while gaining an understanding of mechanical systems. Both classes cover the fundamentals of automobiles and light trucks. Students utilize automotive tools and equipment to study basic systems, general maintenance, and essential consumer information related to the ownership and operation of a motor vehicle. They gain experience in auto technology and related job opportunities by mastering the use of computer diagnostic equipment. In addition, students learn the importance of safety protocols, teamwork, and effective communication.

Currently, 118 students are enrolled in both the Automotive 1 and Automotive 2 classes. Additionally, students in the Honors Innovation & Design program work alongside their peers in automotive projects. Some of these students plan to pursue a career in the auto industry, while others have chosen the classes to gain hands-on knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

This school year, students are working on various projects, including restoring a vintage ambulance for the Howell First Aid Squad. They have installed a new motor and addressed several other issues, determined to get the ambulance back in service for upcoming parades. Over the years, partnerships with local organizations and companies have led to donated vehicles for the students to work on. Jesse Heubel, the technology teacher at Freehold Township, guides the students in these efforts.

Throughout each class period, Mr. Heubel works closely with the students, posing questions and encouraging them to test their theories on how to get specific parts operational again. He guides them through their tasks, helping them gain confidence in their work.

The school's Auto Club is hosting its second annual car show on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the high school.
